Infertility is defined as not being able to get pregnant despite having frequent, unprotected sex for at least a year for most couples. Infertility may results from an issue with male or female or both partners. Male infertility may be due to abnormal sperm production or function & problem with motility of sperm. Causes of female infertility may include ovulation disorders, uterine or cervical abnormalities, fallopian tube damage or blockage, Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Primary ovarian failure etc.

In Ayurveda, Acharya Sushrut mentioned there are four necessary factors for conception that are ritu (season or ovulation), kshetra (field or female reproductive system), beeja (seed or ovum) and ambu (water or nourishing substance).
